Promotion Strategy

(Goal) Performance enhancement and stable operation of large-scale facilities such as HANARO, proton accelerator, radiation irradiation facility, etc.

(Safe operation) Enhancing the safety of nuclear facilities by, for instance, taking actions after the Periodic Safety Review of HANARO

(Stable operation) Operability over 90% of HANARO and proton accelerator, respectively

(Enhancement of performance and Construction of new facilities) Operation of more than 15 neutron scattering instruments, Construction of electron beam facility (year 2018), Construction of proton based Li-8 facility (year 2019), and Construction of supporting facilities for utilizing next-generation synchrotron radiation facility (long term plan)

(Action plan) Substantiating a unified supporting system for users and developing research projects that would share facilities with other research institutes

Research Facilities

  • Research Facilities

    HANARO Thermal Neutron Beam

    Within the confines of the HANARO reactor building, several thermal neutron instruments occupy reactor faces.
    The instruments are as follows: the High Resolution Powder Diffractometer (HRPD), the Four Circle Diffractometer (FCD), the Residual Stress Instrument (RSI), the Neutron Radiography Facility (NRF), and the Ex-core Neutron irradiation Facility (ENF). More instruments will follow in the coming years. These instruments are used to investigate atomic and magnetic structure of matter and the inner structure of various machines and plants.

    Cold Neutron Research Facility

    The Cold Neutron Research Facility houses several cold neutron instruments that are used to study nanometer-sized structures of matter. The instruments are the 40m Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument (40M-SANS), the 18m Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument (18M-SANS), the Vertical-type Reflectometer (REF-V), and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Ultra-Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument (KIST-USANS). More instruments will be available in the coming years.

    Proton Accelerator

    This accelerator strips electron from hydrogen atom and accelerates the remaining proton to 43% of light speed. The fast proton hits the target material and changes its structure and characteristics. The resulting material is used in nano-technology, information and communication technology, biological engineering, aerospace industry, medical sciences and therapy, and energy industry.

    Cyclotron

    The main purpose of the cyclotron is to produce radioisotopes. Thus the device is mostly utilized in radioisotope research and developing radiation generators. As an accelerator of protons, it is also used in proton utilization research.

    Irradiation Facility

    The gamma irradiation facility, the electron accelerator, and the ion injector are used in many disciplines including material science, environment, agriculture, and biological engineering.
