Successful Completion of Jordan Research Reactor (JRTR) Construction Project

- ‘Taking-Over Certificate’ issued to KAERI -

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) announced its successful handing-over of the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) to Jordan on 15 June 2017.
This marks the successful completion of Korea’s first export of a reactor, led by a consortium between KAERI and Daewoo Engineering & Construction. The consortium has completed the construction and test run of the facility after 6 years and 10 months of work since the groundbreaking in August 2010.
Jordan took over the facility after confirming its accordance with the original contract and its consistency with international safety and performance standards. This accomplishment exhibits Korea’s ability to compete in the global market in terms of research reactor construction technology, and opens way for the country to gather momentum in the export of research reactors.
Out of a total of roughly 240 reactors worldwide, more than 60% are over 40 years old and in need of modernization. At the same time, there has also been an increase in new-comer countries interested in research reactors. Research reactors are essential for researches in basic and medical sciences, and industrial radioisotope production, as well as for neutron doping and hydrogen energy related researches. Thus, the demand for small and medium sized research reactors is projected to increase.
KAERI will continue its support for the safe operation of the JRTR by providing adequate education & training and information exchange by utilizing KAERI’s 30 MW High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor(HANARO), which was the basis for the JRTR design.
