Dr. Lim In-cheol, Senior Vice President for Radiation Science of KAERI, was officially appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Technical Working Group on Research Reactors (TWG-RR) of the IAEA at the Conference held in Vienna from April 3 to 7, 2017. He will take on this role until March 31, 2020 as an international expert in the area of research reactors.

The Agency has been increasing its activities in all aspects of research reactor utilization, operation optimization, and the fuel cycle considering the growing interest in research reactors by its member states.

The Agency created a Technical Working Group to promote the efficient use of research reactors, critical and sub-critical assemblies, or facilities of a similar nature, and to look at the projected needs for research reactors on a global and regional basis with a long-term horizon.

The Technical Working Group on Research Reactors (TWG-RR) is a group of senior international experts with recognized experience in the areas of research reactor operation, utilization, maintenance, refurbishment, modernization, fuel (fresh and spent) management, nuclear fuel cycle, quality assurance, and new designs, with particular emphasis on strategies, implementation, technologies, and methodologies.

TWG-RR Members come from various types of organizations having responsibilities for different aspects of research reactors activities. TWG-RR is geographically diverse and contains members from countries having a range of different types of research reactors and associated facilities.

TWG-RR advises the secretariat of the IAEA and provides support for program implementation, reflecting a global network of excellence and expertise in the area of research reactors. TWG-RR also provides a forum for information and knowledge sharing on national and international program development in all of the abovementioned research reactor areas.
