Dr. Joon-Eon Yang of KAERI Appointed as Bureau Member of
OECD/NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI)

□ On December 14, Dr. Joon-Eon Yang, KAERI’s Senior Vice President for Nuclear and Environmental Safety Research,

   was appointed as a bureau member of the OECD/NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI)

   at its 62nd meeting.

  ○ CSNI, which has 20 member countries including Korea, organizes annual meetings to exchange information

      on safety assessments of nuclear facilities, and promotes international research in related fields.

  ○ The CSNI Bureau is comprised of delegates from seven leading countries in the field of nuclear safety,

       including  such as the United States, France, and Japan, and Dr. Yang will serve as a bureau member beginning

       this month.
  

   ※ OECD/NEA (Nuclear Energy Agency): Established in 1957, the intergovernmental agency consists of 31 member countries

       with advanced nuclear technologytechnologies. It facilitates international cooperation in various areas of

       nuclear technology, such as nuclear safety and regulation, radiological protection, radioactive waste management,

       reactor technology, and nuclear law.

□ Dr. Yang served as head of the Integrated Safety Assessment Division at KAERI before being appointed Senior Vice President

    for Nuclear and Environmental Safety Research this April. For the past five years, he was a member of the CSNI

    Programme Review Group (PRG), which reviews the technical feasibility of various international research projects

    undertaken by the OECD/NEA.

 ○ An international expert in nuclear safety, Dr. Yang is also the president of the board of directors of

     Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management (PSAM), the world’s largest academic conference

     on risk area assessment.

□ Dr. Yang said, “As a member of the bureau, I hope to see Korea participates more actively in international researches

    on nuclear safety conducted by the OECD/NEA. By providing domestic organizations with the latest in research trends

    and technology, nuclear safety of in Korean NPPs can be significantly improved.”

□ Meanwhile, Korea launched the second phase of the OECD-ATLAS Project (October 2017 to September 2020), following

   the successful completion of phase 1 this past last March. (April 2014 to March 2017); the OECD-ATLAS Project uses

   the ATLAS facility of KAERI to simulate loss-of-coolant accidents for nuclear reactors and is one of the key joint projects

   of the OECD-NEA.
  

   ※ OECD-ATLAS Project Phase 2 is supported by 19 institutes from 12 countries including the United States, France,

       and the UAE. Thermal-hydraulic safety tests will be conducted using the ATLAS facility at KAERI.
