Dr. Y. H. Chung, KAERI president, met with Dr. Dae Y. Chung, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, DOE Office of Environmental Management, on October 25, 2011.

In the meeting, they discussed ways to strengthen practical cooperation between ROK and US in nuclear energy. Dr. Chung presented overviews on US DOE environmental management policy and activity mainly focused on dealing with the environmental legacy of the Cold War, such as radioactive chemical waste, environmentally polluting materials, and other dangerous materials. They also exchanged views on how they would cooperate on addressing spent fuel issues facing both countries.

DOE EM has carried out very important and meaningful missions of protecting the public health and the environment through environmental restoration, waste management, technology development, and facility transition and management.

Currently, cooperation in the area of Advanced Simulation Capability for Environmental Management(ASCEM), which is being developed as part of the "Clean-up Program for Sites polluted with radioactivity," is underway between KAERI and ANL.

Dr. Chung were invited to the Annual Meeting of the Korean Nuclear Society (KNS) and the International Symposium on Radiation Safety Management (ISRSM)  while he visited Korea to attend the IFNEC Steering Working Group Meeting held in Juju island in May.

He made a technical tour of KAERI facilities, namely, HANARO research reactor, the Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process Facility (ACPF) and the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel(KURT).
