KAERI President met with IAEA Chief

Dr. J. K. Kim, President of KAERI met with Mr. Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Seoul on October 7, 2015. At the meeting, they exchanged a wide range of topics, including concrete and practical ways to promote technical cooperation between KAERI and IAEA. Appreciating the endeavors that the Agency has pursued for the benefit of all IAEA member states, Dr. Kim said that as a nuclear R&D center in Korea, KAERI will continue its efforts to expand the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, which is important for achieving sustainable development and securing nuclear transparency and reliability on nuclear R&D activities.

Dr. Kim also said that we are committed to providing our support to the IAEA by capitalizing on our resources to the fullest in projects such as the Renovation of the Nuclear Applications Laboratories (ReNuAL). IAEA’s Programme for Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT), and IAEA’s support for building nuclear power infrastructure which are major projects the IAEA has been focusing on. Dr. Kim said that Korea is accelerating the development of advanced nuclear energy systems, such as pyro-processing and Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) for the efficient management of spent fuel and Very-high-Temperature Reactors (VHTR) for hydrogen production to further solidify its status as a leader of nuclear technology.

Dr. Kim noted that the meeting was very fruitful for understanding the Agency’s activities spanning a wide range of areas for promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and also it provided him with a good opportunity to better understand the major areas that Mr. Amano as the leader of the IAEA has focused upon.

Apart from his meeting with the president of KAERI, Mr. Amano also met with the Foreign Minister, Science, ICT and Future Planning Minister and Chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission. His meetings with all these ranking officials focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the prevention of nuclear proliferation.
