KAERI and FANR signed MOU to promote cooperation in nuclear safety

KAERI and the United Arab Emirates’ Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 15 September 2015 to promote cooperation in the field of nuclear safety with main focus on light-water nuclear power reactors.

The MOU was signed in Vienna, Austria, by Dr. Jong Kyung Kim, President of KAERI and H.E. Hamad Alkaabi, Deputy Chairman of FANR’s Board of Management and the UAE ambassador to the IAEA during the 59th IAEA General Conference.

The aims of the MOU is to strengthen the existing close cooperation between the two organizations through, amongst others, exchange of general, scientific or technological information and results of R&D on specific topics, short and long term visits by specialists, engineers and other staff of one Party to the facilities of the other Party as may be relevant to the areas of cooperation, exchange or secondment of scientists, engineers and other staff and joint R&D studies and projects on specific topics. Areas of cooperation under this MOU include nuclear safety areas such as thermal-hydraulic experiments, safety analysis, severe accident, risk assessment and management (probabilistic safety assessment), environmental safety evaluation, etc.

KAERI is operating various facilities for APR1400 safety verification and many FANR experts had visited KAERI over the past years while FANR is one of organizations participating at the OECD/NEA international joint collaboration ATLAS Project using the ATLAS facility at KAERI. Dr. Kim said that he is very pleased to sign this MOU with FANR together, which will be indicating that our cooperation relationship is stepping into a new era and KAERI is committed to helping FANR to gain experience in the field of nuclear safety for advanced light-water reactors.
