Forging a Carbon-Free Future: Indonesian NEC Delegation Explores Future Energy Innovation at KAERI
Daejeon, July 31, 2024 – A delegation from the Indonesian National Energy Council (NEC) visited the headquarters of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for a high-level meeting with KAERI President Dr. Han Gyu Joo and Executive Vice President Dr. In Cheol Lim. The NEC delegation was composed of two NEC members, Dr. Yusra Khan and Dr. Eri Pumomohadi, and Mr. Nanang Kristanto from the NEC secretariat.
During the meeting, the NEC representatives presented Indonesia’s energy policy aimed at achieving decarbonization goals and discussed the current state of nuclear power development in Korea and KAERI's research activities including the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
President Joo highlighted how the nuclear power in Korea has contributed to economic growth by providing low-cost electricity. He suggested that considering Indonesia's geographic conditions and its decarbonization goals, the country should look into adopting not only large-scale nuclear power plants but also SMRs.
Additionally, the meeting reaffirmed the collaborative relationship between KAERI and Indonesia in the field of nuclear research and development. Executive Vice President Dr. In Cheol Lim mentioned his visit to Indonesia last May, during which he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). He emphasized the active cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the research reactor fields. The NEC representatives viewed the relationship positively and expressed their appreciation for the collaboration.
Following the discussions, the NEC delegation toured KAERI's HANARO (High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) and SMART-ITL (System Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor-Integral Test Loop) facilities. They showed a keen interest in the development and operation of HANARO, noting its diverse applications in research and industrial support. During the visit to the SMART-ITL facility, the delegation was particularly interested in the features of KAERI's SMART SMR and engaged in detailed inquiries to gain a deeper understanding.
The Indonesia's National Energy Council supports various critical functions in Indonesia. It is responsible for designing and formulating national energy policies, establishing a national energy general plan, implementing measures to overcome energy crises and emergency conditions, and supervising the implementation of cross-sectoral policies in the energy sector.
