Two leading nuclear research institutes in Asia, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), held a Joint Workshop on Development of Future-oriented Cooperation at KAERI's headquarters on July 9-10, 2024.
High-level representatives from both institutions participated in the workshop. KAERI was represented by its President, Dr. Han Gyu Joo, while JAEA's Executive Director, Mr. Kentaro Funaki.
The workshop comprised a management session and five topical sessions focusing on nuclear safety, radioactive waste management and decommissioning, nuclear science research, advanced reactors and their applications, and human resources and organizational capacity-building. Throughout these sessions, both sides exchanged perspectives and experiences related to their respective national nuclear research initiatives and discussed the vital role of nuclear technology in a rapidly changing environment. They agreed to seek opportunities for expanding future cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Both leaders also emphasized the significance of the KAERI-JAEA partnership. KAERI President Joo specifically noted his expectation that the workshop would lead to progressive cooperation between the two institutes in expanding the role of nuclear power in a decarbonized environment.
In conjunction with the workshop, KAERI and JAEA signed an Arrangement for Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, aimed at strengthening the partnership that has been ongoing since 2008.
Following the signing ceremony, the JAEA delegation toured KAERI's research facilities, including the High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor (HANARO), the Advanced Thermal-Hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation (ATLAS), and the SMART-Integral Test Loop (SMART-ITL).
