On October 23, 2026, a Kenyan delegation led by Mr. Justus Wabuyabo, CEO of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), visited Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The delegation included H.E. Prof. Emmy Jerono Kipsoi, Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to the Republic of Korea, and Eng. Peter Njenga, Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), as well as officials from NuPEA, KenGen, and Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
The visit follows the KAERI–NuPEA MOU signed in September 2025 and the joint workshop held in Nairobi in September 2026, marking another step in nearly a decade of cooperation between KAERI and Kenya on the country’s research reactor program. It was arranged for the delegation to see Korea’s nuclear infrastructure firsthand and to identify specific areas for future cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides shared the current status of their nuclear programs and exchanged views on a range of topics, including research reactors, SMRs, human resource development, and public acceptance of nuclear energy. They also discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in support of Kenya’s research reactor program.

Following the meeting, the delegation toured HANARO, Korea’s multipurpose research reactor, where they gained first-hand insight into KAERI’s research reactor design and operation experience.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for both sides to deepen mutual understanding and build on their long-standing partnership. KAERI plans to continue working closely with NuPEA as the Kenya Nuclear Research Reactor (KNRR) project moves forward.
