Information for Users from Abroad on How to Use Neutron Beam Instruments

As of October 2023

HANARO invites beamtime requests twice a year. Information about how to apply for beamtime is sent by email and posted on our Korean website. Emails are sent to those who have given consent to receive them on our Korean website. Prospective users abroad may receive emails written in Korean on a regular basis if they agree on Korean website . Those who find it hard to make out what the Korean emails are about may consult the following guidance on how to apply for beamtime.

HANARO neutron beam instruments are available not only to Korean users but also to users from abroad. Foreign users interested in using HANARO neutron beam instruments may email their inquiries to useroffice@kaeri.re.kr and receive a reply from HANARO staff in charge of the instrument in question. Your beamtime proposal submitted to useroffice@kaeri.re.kr as advised by the HANARO staff will undergo a review to decide whether or not beamtime will be given to the applicant. Or, you may simply choose not to send an email of inquiry in advance but to submit your beamtime proposal directly to useroffice@kaeri.re.kr so that your proposal may go through the review and beamtime allocation process. Beamtime proposal forms can be downloaded on our website from the menu: Information on How to Use Neutron Beam Instruments > Proposal for Beamtime. Users abroad may submit their beamtime proposal even when HANARO is not open for the regular, semi-annual process of accepting proposals. If deemed appropriate, consultations with HANARO staff will take the place of the review process to make a decision on beamtime assignment for resulting execution of experiments. Even in this case, your beamtime proposal must be submitted to useroffice@kaeri.re.kr before carrying out experiments.

In principle, users of HANARO neutron beam instruments should visit the facility and perform experiments in person. However, users may choose to ship their samples to HANARO staff who will carry out experiments in their behalf, so those who would rather not pay a visit may consult HANARO staff who operates the instrument you wish to use.

If you have decided to come to KAERI, you must fill out and submit the “Application for Access to HANARO Neutron Beam Facility” to useroffice@kaeri.re.kr at least 3 days prior to your visit. The application form can be downloaded on our website on the menu: Access to Facility > Users Allocated with Beamtime.

According to KAERI regulations, users from outside should not enter the HANARO Reactor Hall of Guide Hall or perform their experiments on their own to. Please bear in mind that you are not allowed to enter these areas without being accompanied by KAERI staff who runs the instruments therein.
