Welcome to the website of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

Established in 1959 as Korea's first national research institute, KAERI has played a leading role in achieving technological self-reliance and advancing nuclear technology for over six decades. Through these efforts, we have contributed to the nation's scientific and technological progress and improved the quality of life of its people.

Today, nuclear energy is a key energy source for enhancing national energy security and achieving carbon neutrality. It is also a vital field of science and technology that creates new value across various aspects of daily life, including medicine, industry, and the environment.

KAERI is actively developing future nuclear technologies, such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). At the same time, we conduct research to support the sustainable use of nuclear energy by enhancing nuclear safety, ensuring the safe management of spent nuclear fuel, and decommissioning nuclear facilities. Furthermore, leveraging advanced research facilities such as research reactors and a proton accelerator, we are expanding the applications of radiation and quantum beam technologies, opening up new possibilities through convergence with cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Above all, advances in nuclear technology must be grounded in an unwavering commitment to safety and public trust. KAERI supports the safe use of nuclear energy by advancing scientific and systematic safety assessment technologies and strengthening safety management systems for our research facilities and radioactive materials.
