A team of UAE ENEC's Nuclear Safety Review Board visited KAERI on July 27, 2011. Prior to their visit to KAERI, they visited Japan to get a clear picture of the accidents at the Fukushima nuclear power plants and to identify lesson to be learned from the accident. Following the accident, UAE has been preparing for all possible scenarios including NPP blackouts and has been thoroughly reviewing NPP design and sitings. UAE, which has taken nuclear safety as the first priority for NPPs, is also even in preparation for the beyond design base accidents
At their meeting with Dr. Y. H. Jung, KAERI president, they exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including nuclear safety. pyroprocessing, spent fuel, etc.
Areas of their interests shown during the meeting include the management of spent fuel temporarily stored at the plant on-site after 2016, residual heat removal of spent fuel, recognizing the fact that the Fukushima accident has caused the loss of residual heat system for the spent fuel storage area.
NSRB has been working with ENEC on various issues and plans in the coming year. ENEC established the NSRB in July to provide a review of the safety and effectiveness of the construction, startup and operations of the ENEC program, with a core emphasis on nuclear safety. The Board reports to ENEC's Chief Executive Officer. It is chaired by Dr. Dale Klein, a former chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
