Dr. S.C. Chetal, Director of Research Engineering Group, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research(IGCAR), visited KAERI on April 25 on his invited attendance at the 2nd KAERI-IGCAR Workshop on High Temperature Materials, Design and Assessment held at KAERI April 25-26. This workshop hosted by KAERI is aimed at providing an opportunity to discuss practical and concrete ways to promote bilateral cooperation in the area of high-temperature design and materials.

At his meeting with Dr. Y.H. JUNG, KAERI president, congratulating him on taking up the position of IGCAR Director from May 1, Dr. Jung expressed his hope that it would create a new momentum in promoting nuclear cooperation between India and Korea.

Dr. Chetal explained that India's first and only operational breeder reactor is a 40-MWt (mega watt thermal) Fast Breeder Test Reactor which attained criticality in 1985. Scientists at the IGCAR are currently engaged in the construction of another breeder reactor which is a 500-MWe (mega watt electric) prototype fast breeder reactor.

Dr. Chetal is an eminent expert in fast reactor engineering and pressure vessel technology. He has played a key role in Indian fast reactor programme. He has made valuable contributions to the design and technical support for operation of Fast Breeder Test Reactor.

Mostly, bilateral cooperation between India and Korea has been implemented under the multilateral framework such IAEA Technical Cooperation program in the non-power areas such as (mutation breeding, food irradiation, radiation processing, bioscience, radiation medicine and research reactor operation and utilization).
