KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) and SCK-CEN (Belgian Nuclear Research Centre) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance their collaboration in the field of nuclear technology on June 28, 2023. The signing ceremony took place at the SCK-CEN Headquarters, Mol, Belgium, marking a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between the two organizations. The MOU signing was attended by representatives from both KAERI and SCK-CEN, with Dr. Han Gyu Joo, President of KAERI, and SCK-CEN Director General Peter Baeten formally sealing the agreement.

The MOU outlines the commitment of both organizations to actively foster cooperation in several key areas. These include research reactor fuel technology, materials aging, decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, nuclear application technology, and nuclear education and training. To achieve these objectives, the MOU promotes the exchange of researchers, collaborative joint research projects, and the organization of joint workshops and seminars.

Also, KAERI and SCK-CEN held a bilateral cooperation meeting, during which they shared updates on their respective nuclear technology development initiatives and exchanged valuable experiences. This dialogue served to further strengthen the ties between the two organizations and lay the foundation for future collaboration.

An important step in their ongoing partnership was taken on May 31, 2021, with the initiation of the KIMQI (KAERI high-density atomized silicide fuel Qualification Irradiation) project. This project aims to verify the viability of high-density plate-type U3Si2 fuel. Upon successful completion, KAERI will establish itself as a competitive supplier of research reactor fuel in the global market, with SCK CEN serving as a trusted partner. The joint research and verification efforts under the KIMQI project will yield tangible benefits for both institutes while contributing significantly to global non-proliferation goals by reducing the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in research reactors.

As part of their visit, representatives from KAERI also had the opportunity to take a technical tour of BR2, one of the world's most advanced research reactors. Dr. Joo expressed his enthusiasm about the MOU, highlighting the potential for the two organizations to strengthen their long-standing and multifaceted cooperation. He emphasized the importance of exploring new avenues for collaboration that can mutually benefit both parties.

The signing of the MOU between KAERI and SCK CEN represents a significant milestone in their partnership, underscoring their commitment to advancing nuclear technology through joint efforts. With a solid foundation in place, these organizations are poised to deepen their cooperation and explore innovative possibilities in the pursuit of mutual success.
