On March 20, 2024, a delegation from the United Kingdom visited the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in Daejeon, South Korea. The delegation was comprised of representatives from various UK organizations, including the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Environment Agency, UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), and the British Embassy Seoul.
The purpose of the visit was to gain insights into KAERI's advancements in fusion technology, nuclear safety, and waste management, and to foster understanding between the two nations in the field of nuclear energy. The UK delegation introduced its fusion strategy, organizational structure, and research areas.
During the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to learn about KAERI's latest research status in fusion technology through presentations. Following the presentations, the delegation visited KAERI's key facility for disposal safety evaluation R&D, the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT).
The visit underscored the importance of international cooperation and knowledge exchange in advancing nuclear energy research and development. It also demonstrated the commitment of both the UK and South Korea to exploring innovative solutions for sustainable energy production and environmental stewardship.
