H.E. Gourangalal Das, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea, visited Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) on August 3, 2026, for a courtesy meeting with Acting President Dr. In-Cheol Lim. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.

During the meeting, Ambassador Das outlined India’s energy policy, the current status of its nuclear power program including country’s long-term nuclear development plans through 2047. He noted that the Indian government has recently introduced policy reforms and various support measures aimed at expanding commercial uses of nuclear energy. He also underscored the need for closer energy cooperation to address climate change and advance carbon neutrality goals. He expressed India’s interest in expanding technological exchanges and practical cooperation with Korea across a broad range of nuclear fields.

Dr. Lim introduced KAERI’s major research achievements and ongoing R&D activities, including the development of small modular reactors (SMRs). He highlighted the important role of nuclear energy in ensuring a stable and efficient electricity supply, particularly amid rising energy demand and growing concerns over energy security.

The KAERI President further noted that nuclear power would play an increasingly significant role in meeting India’s future energy needs and welcomed the prospect of closer bilateral cooperation in nuclear R&D, including SMR technologies. He emphasized that Korea has developed extensive expertise across nuclear R&D, industry, infrastructure, and regulation, providing a strong foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation with India.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Das toured HANARO, High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor, where he received a firsthand look at the institute’s research facilities, technological capabilities, and major achievements.
