On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Office of Atoms for Peace(OAP) in Thailand, THAI delegation headlined by the OAP Secretary General, visited KAERI on 29 June 2011 to have a first-hand look at on-going nuclear program to promote the understanding on nuclear program in Korea.
Thai delegation was mainly composed of high school and university students appointed as Young Atom Ambassadors on the golden jubilee of OAP. Dr. Y.H. Jung, KAERI president, welcome them and expressed his wish that the THAI students as Young Atom Ambassador will play an important role in promoting positive publicity regarding nuclear activities in Thailand. Mr. Chaivat Tosklkao, TAHI head delegate, expressed their thanks for KAERI’s arrangement for their visit to KAERI. They made a tour of KAERI facilities, HANARO research reactor and ATLAS.
The thing that makes OAP and KAERI even more of a coincidence is that the Thai Research Reactor (TRR-1) and Korea’s first research reactor, the TRIGA Mark-2, started their operation in the same year of 1962. KAERI's 50th founding anniversary was celebrated in 2009, two years earlier than OAP.
Though Thailand plans to introduce a total of five nuclear units by 2025, this plan was held back for 3 years following the Fukushima nuclear accident.
Bilateral cooperation between Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) and KAERI has been very active since an MOU was signed in August 2009. KAERI has provided technical assistance in the refurbishment of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for Thailand's Research Reactor (TRR-1)/M1(modification 1) and also in the construction of a new research reactor in Ongkharak.
