amman, oct. 9  — prime minister hani mulki, on monday, received president of the korea atomic energy research institute (kaeri), jaejoo ha, and an accompanying delegation, and stressed the importance of the jordan nuclear energy program for peaceful purposes.

in the meeting, the prime minister said the jordan nuclear energy program is gaining more importance due to challenges facing the kingdom in the field of energy, emphasizing the need to diversify sources of energy.

“jordan’s priority is to meet the highest standards of nuclear security and peace, through its nuclear program,” the prime minister added. he also underlined the program’s importance in terms of providing affordable and cost-effective energy.

the government, the premier said, depends on the nuclear program in order to increase jordan economy’s competitiveness and its ability to address challenges arising from high energy costs, noting that the program will kick off a new phase of electricity production.

the jordan research and training reactor (jrtr), constructed inside the jordan university for science and technology campus, which was established by a south korean coalition consisting of kaeri and daewoo engineering and construction company, will contribute to the training and rehabilitation of manpower and turn jordan into a center for training and rehabilitating competencies at the level of the region in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, mulki noted.

mulki and ha discussed cooperation between the jordan atomic energy agency and kaeri in the field of scientific research on the uses of the jrtr, and ways to train jordanian engineers and postgraduate students at the kaeri.

kaeri’s president gave an briefing on the technology of small and medium-sized reactors in general, and the smart compact micro-nuclear reactors, designed by kaeri’s experts.

he explained that the cost of electricity generated from these reactors is commercially competitive compared to other sources, such as coal, liquefied gas and solar energy.

he added that these reactors can be used in seawater desalination and the production of desalinated water at competitive prices, not to mention that they consume small quantities of water, which is something jordan is looking for due to the scarcity of water sources, in addition to the small capital cost of constructing such reactors.

the meeting also tackled a tripartite cooperation between kaeri, the jordan atomic energy agency and the saudi king abdullah city for atomic and renewable energy, to conduct an economic feasibility study for electricity generation and seawater desalination using these reactors, in the light of the agreement signed in amman in march.

the meeting was attended by chairman of the jordan atomic energy agency, khaled toukan, and vice chairman & commissioner for nuclear power reactors and international cooperation, kamal araj.
